Johnson mathematics scholars awarded
Derek Loomans, left, and Kyle Talma are this year's recipients of the Johnson Mathematics Scholarship at Waupun Area High School. Each will receive $500 to be used to further their education. The Johnson Mathematics Scholarship is sponsored by David R. Johnson, of Waupaca. Johnson is a 1954 graduate of Waupun High School. This is the third year that the scholarship has been offered to Waupun Area High School students. Johnson is the author of three textbooks; a former presenter for the Bureau of Education and Research; and a retired mathematics department chairman. The scholarship was established in memory of Johnson's parents, Ray and Viola, and his uncle, Roy Johnson. The mathematics department of Waupun Area High School selects the recipients.
Excel Engineering, Inc. awards scholarships
Two area students have been awarded scholarships from Excel Engineering, Inc.
Frederik Karsten, of Waupun, was awarded a $4,000 scholarship.
Shawn Meyer, of Fond du Lac, was awarded a $2,000 scholarship.
Karsten was home-educated and plans to attend Milwaukee School of Engineering and pursue a career in the Mechanical Engineering field.
His parents are John and Susan Karsten.
Meyer will graduate from Winnebago Lutheran Academy and plans to attend Moraine Park Technical College.
His parents are Roy and Sue Meyer.
Scholarship recipients were chosen from among area high school seniors who plan to further their education in an Architectural, Engineering, Surveying or CAD Technician field. Each Spring, Excel notifies all area high schools to recruit applicants. This year Excel received applications from students of Campbellsport High School, Winnebago Lutheran Academy, Central Wisconsin Christian High School and home-educated applicants.

McCune Beach popular summer activity
Avrey Ollanketo, age three, right, and his brother Xavier, age six, of Beaver Dam, played together at McCune Beach in Waupun on Wednesday, June 16. Hours for McCune Beach are Monday through Friday, 1-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday from 1-5 p.m.
