Each year, since 1977, the Frank W Babbitt Award is presented on behalf of the association, to an individual who has shown outstanding service to the motor carrier association, the trucking industry and their community. This award is the highest honor to be bestowed on a WMCA member. Vande Zande was one of five founding members who developed the Waupun Truck N Show, a community festival for the trucking industry. He has served as president of that event for eighteen of the last twenty years. He will be stepping down from that position this year. The Waupun event has provided a great family atmosphere for people in the trucking industry and has helped promote the importance of the industry in Wisconsin's economy. Probably more importantly, it has raised over a quarter of a million dollars for numerous charities, including the Mac fund, the Cap Fund and the Make A Wish Foundation. Vande Zande is a board member of the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association and he has recruited new members for the organization. He is a member of the WMCA's Legislative Affairs Committee, has attended regional legislative briefings and has participated in the WMCA Legislative Day in Madison. He has also been very involved in his community, where he is the assistant chief for the fire department, an active member of his church and has assisted the local youth hockey association. Vande Zande has been very active in numerous other trucking-related organizations and causes. He was one of three founding members that helped organize the Wisconsin Truckers Convoy for Special Olympics, which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year. That event has allowed the trucking industry to partner with law enforcement and the Special Olympics organization, in order to raise money for Special Olympics athletes. Vande Zande has a "heart of gold" and has helped to organize numerous additional fund-raising events for many good causes. He is there for people in his industry and community, when they need a helping hand.
