History, Information on Thomas Organ - Dedication held Tues. Oct. 12, 1976. Thomas Stoddart brought his knowledge of organ building from Scotland about1860. After retiring from the post office and other active business. He began the manufacture in a ,Shop near his residence on Prison Street. (South Madison Street, address now 420 & 420A Park Avenue, was 601 S. Madison St.). Manufacturing pipe and reed organs, he has patent coupbox and resonce boxes as well as a patent bellows on air pump, and makes all with his own hands the softest - toned instruments exticnt. He does not manufacture "for the trade" but for musical people only. He has built over fifty insturments, one of which is a barrel organ eight feet high. This is an organ which plays by machinery. Mr. Stoddart is one of the only three men in America who can make a "music barrel which will play the simplest or most difficult Music. The one mentioned plays from Handel, John Sebastian Bach and other distinquished composers.
