Scope and Content

The American Association for State and Local History, is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to advancing knowledge and appreciation of local history in the United States and Canada. For more than a quarter of a century, the Association has been the only national organization serving the many interests of historical societies and museums. Their several thousand members include volunteer-run local organizations, large well financed institutions with professional staffs, and many individuals who have a personal commitment to or interest in local history. Our association was built on service—the kind of service we would like to offer you and your organization. Consider the programs we offer—wouldn't these programs increase your enjoyment of historical and museum work and make your efforts more successful and rewarding? History News The Association's monthly magazine, History News, brings to its members the latest news in the state and local history field: current programs, national and state legislation, new books, upcoming area conferences, and job vacancies. Regular features include conservation, ideas, Dateline Washington, Oral History, Youthful Outlook, technical leaflets, Book News, and What's Going On. Educational Programs A major goal of the Association is to raise the standards of historical society work, and each year it sponsors training seminars and workshops for both professional staff members and volunteer workers in historical societies and museums. Acknowledged experts in the profession give instruction on a variety of subjects dealing with basic problems of historical society administration, museum management, and the interpretation of history. Technical Leaflets These popular how-to-do-it guides are bound into the center of History News, and are removable for separate use. These leaflets provide members with a growing reference handbook on such varied subjects as Cataloging Photographs, Securing Grant Support, Genealogical Research, Collecting Artifacts, Tax Problems, Furnishing Historic Houses, Operating A Museum Store, Preparing Exhibits, Antique Clocks and dozens of other subjects. Awards Program A national awards committee confers these highly sought-after awards upon individuals, institutions, business firms, and published books. Certificates of Commendation and Awards of Merit are given for excellence and outstanding performance. Job Placement As part of its general service to the profession, the Association maintains a job placement service for its members. Institutional members notify the Association of vacancies, and individual members may register with the placement service without charge. Audiovisual Training These slide-tape programs, called "How-To-Do-Its," are becoming increasingly popular and are available to members on a low-cost loan basis. This growing resource covers a variety of subjects and techniques and makes it possible to extend AASLH training to your office. They are valuable aids in the training of volunteers and staff members, as well as in classroom instruction. Annual Meeting The highlight of the year is the Association's annual meeting, which offers a number of technical sessions, tours, social events, and the opportunity to discuss ideas, problems, and solutions with colleagues from throughout the nation. Books and Bulletins The Association's growing series of bulletins and books has produced many titles which have become standard works, including Organizing a Local Historical Society, The Care of Historical Collections, and A Handbook on the Care of Paintings. In addition, every second year the Association publishes the Directory of Historical Societies and Agencies in the United States and Canada.
