January 14, 1972 The Waupun Leader-News 514 East Main Waupun, Wisconsin 53963 Attention: John O. Kirkpatrick Dear Sir: First, permit me to thank you for your most informative letter, plus attachment regarding the statue "The End of the Trail". You gave me more here than I have been able to garner in almost a month of library research, and many months of oral inquiries. I recall as a youngster in Oklahoma in the 1940s living near the remnants of the once great Sac, Fox, and Osage Nations - wall pictures of this statue were displayed in most all homes. I moved to California in 1948, and didn't see these little pictures, or think about them, until about a year ago they began to show up in various antique shops here at exorbitant prices. I purchased one, in a moment of nostalgia, and this kindled my interest in obtaining the facts surrounding the original statue. In my original letter to your librarian, I mentioned some of the thoughts I obtained from various queries about the statue. One I didn't mention was an old gentleman informing me quite emphatically that the statue was "The Last of the Mohicians. The Plains Indians, with whom I am most, familiar and akin to by an undetermined amount of blood, could offer me no information. As qualification, let me add that I checked only with relatives I have still living on Indian land or adjacent there to in Oklahoma. I am enclosing a dollar for a copy of the booklet you mention your news editor has for sale. If additional money is required for tax and postage, please let me know. Does your local Chamber of Commerce promote a packet of photographs of the statue that sells "reasonable"? Again, thank you for your information. I am humbled that a man in your position saw fit to take the time to answer my query. Yours truly, Robert L. Tipton 461 34th Street Richmond, California 95688
