Scope and Content

February 20, 1972 Dear Mr. Kirkpatrick, Let me thank you for taking the trouble to send the little booklet along to me. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It would appear that for a city of your size you have more than your share of interesting, manmade sights. I find the difference striking between the quantity of statues in your city and here. Richmond is a city of 80,000 plus, and, frankly, I don't believe there is a single statue anywhere in the city. San Francisco has several; however, they appear in the main to be pigeon roosts, and whatever they may be honoring/depicting seems to be buried under a "cover of white". The booklet appears to give all pertinent data on the statues. I found the answers to all my questions about "The End of the Trail", and, at the appropriate time, I hope to be able to "casually" relate this knowledge at a meeting of the American Indian Culture Group, You see, I am an employee of the California Department of Corrections, and within Corrections there is a certain percentage of native Americans. They have been allowed to form a culture group, and I have been fortunate enough to have been invited to some of their meetings. I must say I cannot agree with all of their philosophies, but I find the meetings very interesting nonetheless, I note the booklet indicates the original statue ultimately made its way to Visalia, California. That city is roughly 200 miles from here, and I plan to make a trip there when the weather is nicer, and see if I can't I locate this particular statue. Progress being what it is in this state, however, it may long since have been replaced by a service station or housing development. I would like to keep in touch with you and be advised when your book goes to print. I'm sure it will be very interesting reading. Most Sincerely, Robert L. Tipton
