Scope and Content

FROM THE OFFICE OF FOR RELEASE William A. Steiger, M.C. Saturday Sixth District, Wisconsin June 6, 1970 Washington, D. C. 20515 Phone: 202/225-2476 WAUPUN -- Congressman William A. Steiger today praised the successful community-wide effort of Waupun residents to reclaim an abandoned quarry site for a public swimming beach. Speaking at dedication ceremonies for waupun's McCune Beach projects Steiger said,"Waupun's efforts in creating the McCune Beach facilities are in the very highest American tradition of voluntary action to solve local problems." "The community spirit and leadership that made McCune Beach possible are, in some ways, more important than the act of turning a polluted quarry into a swimming beach," the Sixth District Representative said. "The initiative to stimulate Americans to contribute something of themselves for the betterment of our communities is certainly one of the most important services any individual or any group can undertake." Steiger noted that more than $30,000 was spent on creating McCune Beach and without the support of any government tax funds. Steiger also referred to a letter President Nixon has written to the McCune Beach committee.
