Scope and Content

Teachers Daily Register Book Bound, hard cover record book. Title printed in gold on the spine, that was likely a dark red in color with black front and back hard covers. This book became the property of School Board member, Mr. Arthur Bossenbroek upon the dissolution of the multiple one room schools that had made up District #7. Auctions were held to dispose of contents of the schools. Construction of the Alto consolidated school in 1956 eliminated the need for the Alto, Burbank, Kolsta, Madison, Monroe, Oak Grove and West Alto buildings. * The Burbank school, grades 1-8 was located on the Bossenbroek Farm where Mr. Bossenbroek's daughter, Carol (Bossenbroek) Leonard attended school. Dated material from the Alto School District #7 beginning May 14, 1867 through March 10, 1879. The Register headings are: Teachers Daily Register for the term commencing _____18__ and ending _____18____, Visitors Register List of Text Books Adopted by the School Board. The list included: National Reader, Speller, Arithmetic, Geography, Grammer and U.S. History. Register of Pupils enrolled, their ages and studies pursued during the School Year. The names of boys and girls with studies pursued are listed separately. Grammer and History seem to be the least popular in 1868-1869 with Algebra being offered in 1874-75 just for boys. History was offered to girls and boys beginning with 1868-69 school year. The last of these records was entered for the 1877-78 school year. This Register is in relatively good shape for it's years. However, the ink and pencil is fading and did not transfer well to a photograph. Elaborate writing styles of persons recording in this book leave uncertainties as to the spelling of some of the names. Spelling of names seems to have been at the discretion of the teacher, hence the multiple spellings for some students.
