Diabetic finds new solutions with dietitian
Life is healthier and happier for Lynn Tays, a Waupun resident with diabetes who is grateful for the intervention of Nicole Gill, a registered diabetic dietitian at Agnesian HealthCare. Life-improving methods to get better control of his diabetes were delivered through Gill's expertise.
Lynn, 67, struggled to control his diabetes. Past treatments weren't working that well.
"I didn't have a lot of success until I saw Nicole," he says. "She changed my medications and suggested daily exercise," noting he watched the first half of the Super Bowl on a treadmill at a 24-hour fitness center he joined.
Lynn went to see Gill on the advice of his doctor.
"He was sent to us because of a rising AlC — a lab test that monitors average glucose," Gill says. "He was not newly diagnosed, but needed a change in regimen. Lynn was feeling like his diabetes was running him. He wanted the control back to live his life and manage his diabetes."
Lynn had been taking insulin three times a day, 30 minutes before eating. Gill switched him to mealtime insulin taken right before he eats, as well as a long-acting insulin.
"People don't always know 30 minutes ahead of time that they will be eating," Gill says. "He went from three shots a day to four, but with smaller dosages — and he had the control to take his shots when he eats."
Gill's plan for Lynn also included at least 30 minutes of daily exercise, a self-check of his blood sugar levels four times a day and an increase in the medications he takes orally for better insulin absorption.
"Lynn's blood sugars have improved vastly," Gill says. "The new plan will decrease his chances of complications from diabetes so he can live his best life."
"I hope that by not having a high sugar count all the time it might extend my life," Lynn says.
