Description

Program Prepares Patients/Pharmacy, A Continued Investment from the Agnesin In Good Health Spring/Summer 2011 Patient teaching program prepares patients for joint surgery. A total joint replacement is a major surgery with the potential to change your life for the better. The Agnesian Center for Bone & Joint Health helps patients in both Fond du Lac and Waupun appropriately prepare for this surgery through a pre-op teaching program. According to Andrea Smits, RN, a surgical nurse at Waupun Memorial Hospital, this time helps patients make sure they get the most from surgery. Knowing what to expect — and how to help yourself heal — is extremely helpful, says Rosalie Farvour, a Waupun resident that attended the class and had a left total knee replacement at Waupun Memorial Hospital in late 2010. No such classes were available when Farvour had her right knee replaced in 2009 and she definitely noticed a difference. "The first time, I had no idea what to expect," Farvour says. "The class helps take away the fear of the unknown." Farvour learned about the surgical process, pain management and post-surgery physical therapy. "A respiratory therapist came in and showed us how to use the breathing thing after surgery, to keep our lungs clear," Farvour says. "Then a physical therapy assistant talked about what exercises we'd be doing after surgery." Other topics covered in the patient education program include a review of the medications ordered post-op, possible surgical complications and how to deal with them and ways patients can arrange their home environment pre-surgery so that it's more comfortable post-surgery. The Agnesian Pharmacy in Waupun has a new home: 904 West Main Street, just a few doors down from its old location. Why go through the process of renovating and moving in essentially the same place? To better serve Waupun and the surrounding area, says Jim VanderWerff, RPh, Agnesian Pharmacy Waupun managing pharmacist. "Agnesian HealthCare is interested in serving the health needs of this community," VanderWerff says. "We're committed to a long-term presence." The new location is more spacious and includes room for an expanded retail area, expanded pharmacy and an adjacent Agnesian EZ Care (care for minor illnesses). The retail section of the pharmacy now includes a large offering of over-the-counter medications — a plus, VanderWerff says, to a community that no longer has a variety store. The extra space has also allowed the Agnesian Pharmacy to consolidate its long-term care prescription department. Agnesian Pharmacy Waupun pharmacists now oversee and fill medication orders for residents at all assisted living facilities and nursing homes served by Agnesian HealthCare. "We can now handle long-term care medication more efficiently," VanderWerff says.
