Description

George Smith house, 31 Cochituate Road, Dan Graham & friends This double house was built as a residence and store by George Smith in about 1845. He ran a dry goods store here and in the 1860s added postal service as well. By about 1870 the double house was owned by Jeremiah Mullen (1821-1896). In the early 1900s, part of this house was used as the rectory for the Catholic priest. Later this double house was owned by Sophia Bennett Sears. During the 1920s Daniel Graham and his wife Hannah lived here and probably rented from the Bennetts. In 1946 Sophia Sears sold the double house to Thomas F. and Blanche C. McManus. n the 1940s Elizabeth Heard Russell had an antique store here. his trend of commercial use continued into the second half of the 20th century when there was a gift shop through the 1950s and 1960s, followed by a book store (Waybridge) in the 1970s and 1980s followed by another gift shop (Pei-Lin) after 1987. Medical offices now occupy the building.
