Description

George Washington Memorial Highway monument, 200th birthday of George Washington, 1932. It followed the route that Washington traveled twice: when taking command of the Continental Army, and later in the fall of 1789 after he became president. The highway was marked with 22 plaques along the route between Agawam and Cambridge. Wayland's monument contains a plaque with a bas relief bust of George Washington which is about 4' in height. It is mounted on an approximately 6' diameter circular granite millstone mounted vertically on a similar circular granite millstone resting horizontally on the ground. The vertical stone is decorated with diagonal lines. The horizontal stone is decorated with curved lines. the inscription reads: "This tablet marks the George Washington Memorial Highway at Wayland 1732 - 1932". It is located at Wayland Town Center District Routes 20, 27 and 126. The designer is unknown.
