Written by HerselfDescription
Describes the sexual oppression Jacobs suffered while a slave and her successful struggle to free herself and her children. It was written to bring to the attention of the women of the northern states the conditon of the black women of the south.Although Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is now recognized as a major antebellum autobiography of a Black woman, the timing of its publication in the months of the Civil War brought it little public notice.
