Quilter Name Once Known Pinwheel Medallion - unique With Roman Stripe c.1800 Silk 78" x 78" Look out the window and you will spy a Federal house (lower right), built around 1820 by Jonathan Fiske Heard. Lorenzo Knight Lovell (lower photo), a Civil War veteran and corporal in the 25th Massachusetts Regiment, purchased the property in 1874 and converted the then adjacent old town hall (Collins Market, with the columns) into a dry goods store (1879). The Lovell family operated the store for over 50 years while living in their home. Sarah Emily Lovell (b. August 15, 1879) lived in the house for nearly a century and would later donate this quilt to the Wayland Museum. Sarah was a teacher at State College and served as head of household into the 1940s before the property was passed to a cousin in the mid-1970s. 89-Q20 | Donor Sarah Emily Lovell
