Description

Sibley House, 30 Cochituate Road (Bennett House), with bunting First known owner was Mark Collins Sibley who is reported to have built this house in ca. 1818 or possibly as late as 1821. Sibley was the innkeeper at the next door Pequod Inn (no longer extant) that had served as an inn and stage stop from 1771 when it was built. In 1889, the widow of Jonas Bennett owned the property. This was Anna Bennett, daughter of Judge Edward and Sophie Mellen (24 Cochituate Road) and wife of Theodore W. Bennett (d. 1899, son of Jonas) who owned the house from about 1886 until her death in 1929. This house was inherited by Anna’s daughter Ruth Bennett Dickson of Weston. When Ruth died in 1957, the house passed to her heirs including a daughter Anna Dickson Ela and her husband Roger Ela who served as town counsel, town moderator and other local government posts. This property was sold to Richard and Shirley Secor in 1964. Shirley served on the Wayland Historic District Commission for nearly 20 years . The Secors owned this house for about forty-five years until Richard’s death in 2009. The woman in the photo is Anna Dickson Ela who lived in the house in 1930.
