Description

Sword, French and Indian War period, Infantry Officers [Following comments are based on notes from John Hamilton, Museum of Our National Heritage, Lexington, MA. He is a specialist at this museum and a gun specialist at Skinner's Auction Galleries in Bolton, MA. Ron Borgeson, Worcester Historical Museum, offered additional comments 8/19/93] - Size: 35 7/8" long (indicates early date); "massive, big, military" Militia of 1820-1840 = 32" long War of 1812 had mostly curved blades American Revolution = 32" long (Revolution cavalry sabres had curved blades. Some small triangular section blades were 28" long). - No markings, engravings, or stamps; gone (worn) - Material: Forged blade; Blade & handle have been painted black, maybe someone tried to blue it. NCO sword usually had brass blade & straight edge; some were cast steel; Handle: brass. - Infantry officers sword; English or possible German. From Henry VIII on, England leaned on Europe, esp. Germany, for bladesmiths. - Probably not an officers, but maybe it could be; officers had to supply their own weapons - Date: c.1740, form is probably French & Indian War period; pattern is not too different from the one popular in the American Revolution.
