Name/Title

Table - drop-leaf

Description

The dropleaf Hepplewhite table has a top that is 33" wide and each drop leaf is 8 1/2" wide. The leafs have serpentine edge on the long sides and are held open with wood butterfly hinges. The top is screwed on to the base with modern screws that are inserted through gouge marks in the base. The top has beveled edges on the long sides to give a more finished look when the leafs are dropped. The short ends of the top have curved edge to form a serpentine edge when the leafs are up/open. A long drawer with a beaded front and a small brass Hepplewhite pull is accessed from one of the short ends of the top. The table has four tapered squared legs. There is a missing wedge piece from one leaf where it meets the beveled edge of the top. Tables with short leafs like this one often are called "Pembroke" tables.

General Notes

Note

Part of furniture bequeathed to WHS by Will of Dorothy Draper Healey (1894-1963) including highboy, sofa, sewing table, drop leaf table with drawer, two mahogony side chairs, two rush-seat chairs, old desk with four drawers, Boston rocker (footstool). Dorothy Draper Healey was the daughter of Gertrude Healey (1866-1955) , grandaughter of James Austin Draper (1835-1903) and Abby Drury Draper (1835-1876). The furniture is reported to have belonged to her grandmother - Abby Drury Draper, so probably passed down from Dorothy's mother, Gertrude Draper Healey.
