31465 Tyler St.Context
31465 Tyler St. In September 1964 it was the site of a major racial clash which made headlines across metro Detroit. Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Phipps and their 14 year old daughter bought the house on September 22, and within a week every window in the house was smashed out, because the Phipps were the first black family to move into that part of Wayne. When the family moved in later on a crowd of 150 people gathered and threw rocks and bricks at the house. Luckily the city, police, Michigan civil rights commission, Wayne human relations council, school officials and local clergy were having none of this, so they stepped in to help. The city sent out flyers reminding people about laws and constitutional rights, clergy preached from their pulpits, and two members of the civil rights commission moved in with the family and stayed there to protect them, as well as having Wayne police on site. Things had calmed down by December, and the Phipps were very grateful for all the things the community had done to help them.Cataloged By
