34588 Glenwood. Harley Smith HouseContext
34588 Glenwood. Harley Smith House. Photographed 6-21-1929 by Detroit Edison. It was built by Harley E. Smith in 1925, for his second wife Harriet and their two children. Smith was the president of the Detroit Soda Products company, which made baking soda and borax at a factory in Wyandotte. The Smiths previously had a very stately home in Detroits Boston-Edison neighborhood, but moved out here "to the country". In 1930 the house was valued at $10,000. Interestingly also in 1930 the family had an African American live-in male servant named Bennie Glenn. Mr Smith was very involved in the community, being on the boards of the hospital, Wyandotte railroad, and the national bank of Detroit, as well as Wayne Rotary. He died in 1964 and his wife in 1969.Cataloged By
