Leggo Home - The CastleDescription
Leggo Home - The CastleContext
The Castle: Located at the corner of Tyler and Harding street, just off Merriman used to be a local curiosity, a hand built medieval style castle. It was begun in 1935 by Curtis and Gladys Leggo, who built the house by hand over the course of 25 years using salvaged material from buildings being torn down in the Detroit area. The building had slate from an old church, marble floors from the Old Detroit bank, and 22 tombstones incorporated into it. The home had 10 rooms, battlements, a circular stairway, large fireplaces and stone floors. There was also a cantilevered stone bed in the master bedroom weighing 3,500 pounds. The fireplace was inlaid with stones from 48 countries that servicemen sent the Leggo's during ww2. The home was such a curiosity that the owners opened it up for tours on a few occasions. It was torn down in 1968 during the Urban Renewal campaignCataloged By
