A Pictorial Map of Wenham and Environs 1776Entry/Object ID
X2017.933.BDescription
This pictorial map of Wenham, Beverly, Hamilton, Danvers was compiled by Rupert B. Lillie and is dated 1976. This appears to be Lillie's original. It shows the locations of homes, businesses and gives historical information. Although the base date is 1776, Lillie gives information on events and people prior to that year, including data on some people involved in the witchcraft crises of 1692. The underscoring of some data indicates houses "now standing with dates of original or estimated construction". In addition to houses, the map shows locations of taverns, shops, mills etc. (One historical note on the map is incorrect. The note says "Home of Bridget Bishop who kept a tavern here....was hanged as a witch in 1692" This was actually the home and tavern of Sarah and Edward Bishop - Edward was the stepson of Bridget. Sarah and Edward were arrested in 1692, but escaped. - See "John Hale, A Man Beset by Witches")
