Scope and Content

A Civil War valentine glued to a 4" x 6" index card. In the center is a tent with an American flag at the top and white material below as the tent flaps. There is a blue sky behind the tent. The flaps are split vertically in two, and when they are opened it reveals a lithographed scene with a soldier inside. He is sitting at a table and writing to his wife or girlfriend. A woman's figure is above his head as though thinking of her. On the back is faintly written in pencil, "18970, Mansell." Joseph Mansell was a stationer, engraver and manufacturer of cards in London. Note: This card is the same as # 1997.25.027DD, except that card is on its original embossed background.
