Whites Trace Branch: WTB2, Archaeological SiteEntry/Object ID
WTB2.04.21.07Description
This collection includes 36 items: one (1) piece of wood with two bullets lodged inside it (one bullet has worked loose), one (1) .32 ACP cartridge, six (6) bullets, most disfigured from impact, and 28 various casings.Context
Whites Trace Branch is a long hollow feeding into the Blair Gap, and a major strategic area for the miners. Here, the miners moved into the battlefield in several locations against heavily guarded defensive positions. The creek bed included a road which ran up through the gap in 1921, traveled by the miners and guarded by defenders, and at least two homesteads (see Shovel Test Pit and 1 Meter Test Pit entries for artifacts from these house sites).
This site, WTB2, is 550 meters east of WTB1, and included a machine gun position on the miners' side. Almost the entire range of calibers which have been found throughout the battlefield are also represented at WTB2, displaying the wide array of personal weaponry they brought to the battle. Spent bullets, which have corrollary casings found at nearby defensive sites, show that the miners at this position took incoming fire.Collection
