Die-cut paper sticker in support of the United Mine Workers during the strikes at A.T. Massey-owned coal mining operations in Pennsylvania, Kentucky and West Virginia. The words "A.T. Massey" are circled and crossed out.

Context

The strike against A.T. Massey Coal Company began on October 1, 1984 and lasted through December 1985. The struggle was bitter and violent in some communities, and was generally characterized as an attack on the power of the UMWA itself. Don Blankenship was a Massey manager at the time, and would continue to ascend in the company as an anti-union operator known for skirting safety measures. The Massey strikes were particularly difficult in the communities in Mingo County, WV near where the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum is located.
