Context

Whites Trace Branch is a long hollow feeding into the Blair Gap, and a major strategic area for the miners. Here, the miners moved into the battlefield in several locations against heavily guarded defensive positions. The creek bed included a road which ran up through the gap in 1921, traveled by the miners and guarded by defenders, and at least two homesteads (see Shovel Test Pit and 1 Meter Test Pit entries for artifacts from these house sites). This site, WTB1, is located where the crests of Blair Mountain can be seen, on a hill south of the creek by around 60 meters.
