Description

Five (5) items in this collection. One shotgun brass head, and one .45 ACP cartridge. There is also one D- or C-cell battery and a washer, which are consistent with early flashlight batteries of the era. There is also a long, black piece that is most likely the graphite core for a larger dry cell battery (or "igniter") consistent with a type, like the Columbia No.6, used for early field telephones and radios. Presence of the battery and high positioning of this site indicates a possible observation post, with the battery interpreted as part of a radio or other portable communication device, technology potentially familiar to veterans of World War 1.

Context

"This small site (20 by 15 meters) is located on a hill to the north of the previously-described sites. It is situated near the head of the Craddock Fork tributary covered by 46LG212. This is an unusual site in that only one shell was found, in this case an unfired cartridge of a .45. Also unusual is the presence of five batteries or battery elements. One is a D-cell, and the other four are battery cores. Despite our initial attempts to date these artifacts (battery coverage on the internet is not extensive), we have not been able to do so. Nothing we have found would indicate they post-dated the battle. One indicator of their interpretation as battle-period is the close proximity to the .45 cartridge. Another is the location of one of the batteries in one of the two trenches/rockworks. While we cannot without excavation determine the nature and date of the trenches, we know that such trench/rockworks were employed by the battle defenders, as we documented at 46LG221. While circumstantial evidence seems to indicate battle-relevance, further analysis, both field and lab, would be necessary to come to firm conclusions. If the" [text stops] (Ayers team, 2006)
