Entry/Object ID

Description

Only one object, #2, remains in this collection. It is a .22 cal High Power casing. Possible location of a trail connecting Mill Creek with Craddock Fork areas, this position would have served as passage from the northern defensive positions on Crooked Creek to the defenders base at Mill Creek.

Context

"This tiny site, about five by 12 meters, is situated in a small gap overlooking a tributary of Craddock Fork to the south, and Butch Fork to the north. It is located about 1.5 kilometers north of Crooked Creek Gap and is across the Craddock Fork tributary from 46LG212. Only four artifacts were found at this site. The calibers included .22 HP, .45-70, and .38-55, all representing rifles. This assortment of rifles is a bit odd. Only four other sites of the 14 reported herein had .22 HP's, only two others had .45-70's, and only one other had .38-55 casings. This site is obviously very small in size and artifact yield, but it was the northern-most site the survey located of the Crooked Creek Gap-related evidence. Had we been able to go up from the gap to the east to the ridge above, we may well have found more evidence of the battle but time constraints prevented us from getting to this isolated area. The ridge is protected by an almost un-climbable cliff on its west by a steep, roadless area when approaching from Craddock Fork from the east, but is a high priority for future investigations."
