Description

Seven (7) casings, all .30-06 except one (1) .45 Colt. Beech Fork area is located in a gap running from Beech Creek to Ethel Hollow, where the Defenders had a base of operations. Capt. Brockus and his State Police retreated to this position after their nighttime raid on the miners in Spruce Fork Valley on 8/27/21. After this, miners established a defensive position at the head of Beech Fork.

Context

"This small site (20 by 25 meters) is located in the vicinity of Beech Creek, and is the southeasterly-most site located and documented by the survey between Crooked Creek Gap and the Blair Crests. It is just off a trail and was documented by the 1991 survey. It is dominated by several large rocks which likely provided cover for the defenders. A total of 13 artifacts were collected, 12 .30-06's and one .45. The site has been fairly heavily looted, so we collected most of the artifacts we found." (Ayers team, 2006)
