Lepidodendron Fossil, Coal

Name/Title

Lepidodendron Fossil, Coal

Entry/Object ID

MW.0137

Description

Lepidodendron (scale tree) bark impression/fossil in bituminous coal.

Context

Lepidodendron trees, also known as “scale trees”, were tall vascular trees related to the modern club moss. Often mistaken for the impressions of giant snakes, these are common fossils to find in coal mines, since coal was formed in areas which had once been vast prehistoric wetlands where these trees thrived.
