Description

Oct. 7: Wheeler writes to say that he hope hurricane has not caused the damage in NJ that it has cause in his woods. Has not put in holly cuttings because coal is uncertain and he does not want to run out. Trees badly windswept by hurricane. Encloses Sabbati Fernaldii seeds. Cranberry crop badly down. Son Dick is being sent to Fort Dix. Oct. 12: Elizabeth describes pine trees down in village + 6" rain which helped after drought. She hasn't put in holly cuttings either because of coal. Few berries (drought) except for "Emily" variety. Mentions beginning of committee for Promotion of Holly (NJ). Does not know Mr. Wolf but is interested. Good cuttings can be got from his blown down trees.

Wilfrid is misspelled as "Wilfred" on this typewritten copy of the original letter. This was brought to the archives' attention by Wheeler's great-granddaughter Emily Wheeler. Original letters were then found after the copy was accessioned.
