Letters Between Elizabeth White and Wilfrid Wheeler
Entry/Object ID
1984.3.45
Description
Elizabeth writes to compliment Wheeler on his holly selections. She had to rely on someone else (someone "none too discriminating") bringing the specimens from the wild in the beginning, so she had to select after she had plants in nursery rows. This enabled her to see which were difficult to grow and dropped those unless they had some outstanding quality. She thinks they should pay special attention to the tree Wheeler found that was good for cutting sprays because the greatest use of the holly will be Christmas cut holly. Talks about being able to get cutting from Griscom holly after it was broken by a storm. Severe pruning will provide good cuttings. Hopes for a better slide of the Griscom holly.

Wilfrid is misspelled as "Wilfred" on this typewritten copy of the original letter. This was brought to the archives' attention by Wheeler's great-granddaughter Emily Wheeler. Original letters were then found after the copy was accessioned.
