Letters Between Elizabeth White and Wilfrid Wheeler
Entry/Object ID
1984.3.46
Description
Wheeler writes to say that he hopes Elizabeth will get away from the farm for a while this winter, but travel is difficult with rooms and hotels filled to capacity. He plans to severely prune the best tree so that it will "make a lot of new wood next season". He got a lot of good cutting from the Emily tree even though it was hacked to pieces by the army. He writes a lot about birds eating holly berries. Thinks they like astringent fruit and will certainly eat the holly berries when other food is scarce. Thinks he will put a few blueberry cuttings in green houses. Wonders if hollies will come back from hurricane defoliation. Had hoped to go to King Phillip swamp in RI but didn't get there. Asks what holly committee is doing.

Wilfrid is misspelled as "Wilfred" on this typewritten copy of the original letter. This was brought to the archives' attention by Wheeler's great-granddaughter Emily Wheeler. Original letters were then found after the copy was accessioned.
