Description

Wheeler writes that he is sending "a few sprays" of a holly tree whose owner gave him permission to clean it up or remove. Too big to remove, so he cleaned it up and fertilized it and though not attractive as a garden tree, it has loads of berries and is good for cutting. Generally, holly leave and berries are poor because of salt spray from hurricanes. He is sending 300 hollies to be grafted, doesn't like grafting but feels it is "the only way to save several good trees that are in a development project." Hopes that Elizabeth can get away for a bit this winter.

Note

Wilfrid is misspelled as "Wilfred" on this typewritten copy of the original letter. This was brought to the archives' attention by Wheeler's great-granddaughter Emily Wheeler. Original letters were then found after the copy was accessioned.
