Jan. 3: Wheeler wishes Elizabeth a happy new year despite the horror of war. Elizabeth sent him a package of holly branches which got delayed in the Christmas mail and arrived dried out. He suggests using copper to improve the color of holly foliage, also cow manure. He has also had good results with poultry manure. Mentions a Franklinia Elizabeth sent him. Jan. 14: Elizabeth thanks him for Boston Globe article about Wheeler's work. Says she will try copper. Says she is going to spend two weeks at a small Phila. hotel for a change. Mentions a Ben Blackburn who worked with holly at Rutgers. Has been doing camouflage work on Cape Cod canal; has given him Wheeler's name.
