Dec. 8: White expresses interest in Christmas demand for cut holly. Has contacted S. Pennock florists in Philadelphia. Describes a visit she had had from S.L. O' Rourke of Beltville Station. Claims the Howard tree, a Florida strain, is most beautiful ilex opaca. Has a complex theory of holly pollination--Elizabeth hopes he is wrong as it would make things much more difficult. Refers to Thanksgiving dinner and admits to "great skill as a cook".
Dec. 10: Wheeler says very few berries on Cape this year. Trees being stripped by red squirrels and field mice in a way he has never seen before.Does not think O'Rourke pollination theory is right. Not interested in Howard holly since it is not hardy. He thinks he and Elizabeth are right to grow the hardy ones.
