Scope and Content

There are two separate articles on holly in this issue of Flower Grower. The first, "Hollies for Hedges" by G. G. Nearing pp. 22, 50-51. He identifies types of holly suitable for hedges by geographic location and gives basic instructions regarding proper time for transplanting. Nearing advises use of nursery rather than wild plants and cautions against shearing the plants for ornamental use at Christmas. The second article by Earle Dilatush is simply called "The Holly Tree". Some basic facts are given at the start. Both Nearing and Dilatush agree that fertilizers should not be used in northern climates. He spends much time describing several named varieties, their good and not so good points. Describes "Canary", a holly with bright yellow berries, "Old Heavy Berry" is Dilatush's favorite which he introduced. Articles within Aug. 1950 edition of Flower Grower Magazine
