Description

Colored hand-painted photographic postcard of the Whittier Birthplace and John Greenleaf Whittier. In the foreground is a wooden bridge and dirt road, with the Birthplace centered further back. There are shrubs and trees in the yard, with additional trees in the background behind the building. A black automobile with two people is seen driving up the road and a portion of the barn can be seen on the right-hand side. An oval portrait of Whittier as an older man wearing a green and black jacket with an orange tie is in the upper left corner of the postcard. Text underneath the portrait reads [John Greenleaf Whittier]. Text at the very bottom of the postcard reads [POET WHITTIER'S BIRTHPLACE, BUILT 1688, HAVERHILL, MASS.]. On the back, there is a printer's mark, a green 1¢ stamp, and postmark from Haverhill (Bradford), Massachusetts dated October 28 at 5 PM. The postcard is addressed to Mrs. Walter D. Schweitzer in Halifax, Massachusetts. The postcard has been used and there are inscriptions along with the inventory number.
