Description

Black and white postcard of an illustration of the inside of the schoolhouse featured in John Greenleaf Whittier's poem, "School Days." Black text directly under the illustration reads [The Old School-house. / "Within, the master's desk is seen, / Deep scarred by raps official; / The warping floor, the battered seats, / The jack-knife's carved initial; / The charcoal frescos on its wall; / Its door's worn sill, betraying / The feet that, creeping slow to school, / Went storming out to playing!" / Whittier.]. Small black text at the very bottom of the postcard reads [FROM AN OLD PRINT / 1203. WHITTIER'S BIRTHPLACE, HAVERHILL, MASS.]. The postcard has not been used, there is no stamp box and no inscriptions besides the inventory number.
