A friend, Simon Bishop, began making pot calls and encouraged him to try it out. He had no aspirations to build pot calls. But as he turned a striker, an overwhelming urge to make a trumpet call came over him. He went home and immediately ordered a lathe. His shop is in Eton, Georgia. Mark Sharpe and Billy McCallister were a big help when Ellis started out. He had no major influence on his call internals, as they were attained through trial and error. But for the external style, he drew a lot of inspiration from Charlie Trotter and Mike Williams for the material choices and the clean lines and proportional style of their calls. His first calls were trumpets in 2015: T5 short trumpet T6 long trumpet J1 3-piece Yelper Ellis started making handled short boxes in late 2015, his first Chibouk pipe yelper and true Jordan cane yelpers in 2017, his first scratchbox in 2018, and his first XT trumpet in 2019. He developed the first locking, threaded trumpet lipstop in 2021. He then also began making the Alloy Assassin Aluminum cerakote and "heavy metal" brass, copper, Damascus, and Mokome Gane yelpers. Ellis won several blue ribbons and best-in-class awards in smaller callmaking competitions like the Midwest, Southeast, and Keystone competitions. He placed in the top 5 for multiple years in the NWTF Grand National Callmakers Competition, hunting trumpet and Jordan category from 2016-2020. He won the Turpin award in 2020 and then retired from callmaking competitions.
