Description

Few callmakers have a career spanning seven decades, and whose calls are as revered as those of the late Billy Buice of Canton, GA. Born in 1942, he developed a love for history and his Native American roots. In 1965, Billy enlisted in the United States Navy, where he became a SeeBee and later served with distinction in the Vietnam War. Upon his honorable discharge from service, he returned to work as a carpenter and cabinetmaker. His callmaking began in 1968 with a suction call consisting of a wingbone mouthpiece, a rifle shell for the center, and a turned piece of cocobolo wood. He would use that call on a hunt with his friend Sambo Worthington, calling a gobbler nearly 200 yards across a slough on Lake Eufaula. Hunters and collectors covet his handcrafted turkey box calls and trumpets. His adjustable Dial-Tone box calls and flat-top trumpets with interchangeable mouthpieces are examples of his callmaking innovations. Many callmakers sought Billy out for his friendship and knowledge. His shop was a regular stop on pilgrimages for those who love turkey calls. Billy passed away on January 13, 2026, and will be forever remembered for his stellar character and talent.
