Description

At 38 years old, Chris Shrout is a custom callmaker from the mountains of Western Maryland and has served as a Maryland State Trooper for the past 18 years. Alongside his career in law enforcement, Chris has built a reputation for crafting handcrafted turkey calls, strikers, and trumpets through his business, Alpenglow Calls. Chris's passion for callmaking began in 2021 following the passing of his brother. Having been an avid collector of custom turkey calls for years, he found healing and purpose by stepping behind the lathe and creating calls of his own. He started by building pot calls before expanding into hand-turned strikers and turkey trumpets, continually refining his craftsmanship from the same garage shop where Alpenglow Calls was founded and still operates today. Chris has been fortunate to learn from and be influenced by several respected callmakers along the way. He is especially grateful to Matt McLain, Clay Townsend, and Billy McCallister for their generosity, guidance, encouragement, and willingness to share their knowledge. Their mentorship and influence have played an important role in helping Chris develop both his craftsmanship and his appreciation for the tradition of custom callmaking. The name Alpenglow refers to the reddish-pink light that illuminates mountain peaks just before sunrise or just after sunset. For Chris, that quiet glow represents one of the most meaningful moments of being outdoors in the mountains of Western Maryland—a reminder that the experience of hunting extends far beyond the harvest. It reflects the peace, beauty, and gratitude found in nature. Hunting has always been woven into Chris's life. His late father possessed a remarkable natural ability to hunt gobblers in both the spring and fall, leaving a lasting influence on Chris's appreciation for wild turkeys, the outdoors, and the traditions of hunting. When he isn't in the shop or on duty, Chris enjoys turkey and waterfowl hunting, collecting custom calls, creating artwork, listening to music, and staying active through exercise. Above all else, Chris is devoted to his family. He and his wife, Holly, have been married for 10 years and are the proud parents of two beautiful children. Chris considers his wife and children his greatest blessing and credits them for making him the man he is today. They are the foundation behind everything he does, both in life and through Alpenglow Calls.
