Church & Companies Arm & Hammer poster featuring wild turkeysEntry/Object ID
TAFC001A0011Description
Not all promotional material produced in the early 1900’s featuring the wild turkey was produced by sporting goods concerns. Seeking broad public appeal, Church and Companies, maker of the Arm and Hammer brand of baking soda, featured game birds, songbirds, and other avian-related materials in much of their early advertising.
This original lithograph, copyrighted in 1907, is an example of the wild turkey depicted in advertising aimed at ordinary consumers as well as sportsmen. The artist, Gustav Muss Arnolt (1858-1927), was a German-American illustrator who immigrated to New York City in 1890. Noted for his work depicting waterfowl and bird dogs, he also produced many iconic illustrations for Winchester and the Peters Cartridge Company.Collection
