Description

Neil Cost is most often associated with the boat paddle style of longbox turkey call, but the original calls were made by Eminence, MO area callmakers. Cost's boat paddles were inspired by a long box made by Eminence-area call maker Walter Winterbottom (1913-1991). Winterbottom had, in turn, made his calls in that style after seeing a "Fence Post" longbox made by Cecil Fry (1923-2010). Contemporary callmaker from the Eminence area, David Ferguson, has shared the story of the orgins of the Fence Post moniker, "The actual name “Fence Post” probably came from Cecil Fry. He made calls that were long and narrow. Sixteen inches was his common length in the early years of his call making. They teased him at work, stating they “could use his call to set wall studs,” and even “use it as a fence post.” He then started calling his call “The Fence Post.”
