Description

The King Powder Company was located on the outskirts of Cincinnati, Ohio, directly across the Little Miami River from Peter’s (see other entries for history on Peters) facilities and the two firms produced this Handy Book for Trap Shooters and Sportsmen in July, 1902 as a Thirteenth Edition. This booklet contains contemporaneous trap shooting rules, state game laws, and other sporting miscellany, including, of course, ample verbiage touting the virtues of King’s powder and Peters’ ammunition. Interestingly, the gobbler standing at attention on an envelope by Peters also pictured here is nearly identical to the wild turkey pictured on the Handy Book cover. Of note are the state game laws summarized in the book’s text applying to wild turkeys in 1902. These regulations vary significantly from state to state, although a common theme seems to be the discouragement of market hunting in one way or another. In Missouri, for example, the season runs from November 1 to January 1. No limits are specified, but “exporting” from the county where taken is not permitted. There is a blanket prohibition on hunting by non-residents. Iowa’s season dates are identical but market hunting is expressly prohibited, as is trespassing, exporting and “killing more than 25 birds or fowl in one day”. A license fee of $10.00 is required for nonresidents, which would have been a hefty sum in 1902!
