Description

Henry Clay Gibson of Dardanelle, AR filed a patent for a box call June 17, 1896. Patent 574,534 was issued for his "Turkey Caller and Gobbler" on January 5, 1897. Although box calls were no doubt being made prior, this is a landmark patent. While the box call in the patent is a one-piece box (drilled and hewn from a single block of wood), Gibson would ultimately produce his box call in a sawn-and-glued style. That would have made production much more efficient. The box call has no spring under the paddle, requiring a little more canting of the paddle and wrist action than a modern box call with a spring. Nonethless, modern box calls are noticeably made in this style yet today.
