Henry E. Davis turkey calls and gunEntry/Object ID

Henry Edwards Davis (1879-1966) of Florence, South Carolina, is one of the most celebrated names in turkey-hunting history. A lawyer by profession and woodworker by hobby, he would probably best like to be remembered as "a turkey hunter." His passion would lead to a classic book in 1949, The American Wild Turkey. Davis' writings qualify him as an expert in turkey language and biology, and in fall hunting. He despised spring gobbler hunting and fall hunting with dogs, preferring to hunt turkeys in the fall with rifles, including jakes, at which today a modern turkey hunter may recoil. At the time, this was common practice, and Davis was classy in his approach, even advocating to others the need for ethics, restraint, and management. Like modern turkey hunters, he sought out every style call to try. That led him to try his own hand at callmaking, and he was known to make box calls, scratch boxes, and trumpets. There are few verified examples, but those we know of are well made.Collection
