W. H. “Chip” Gross was born November 4, 1951. He and his wife of more than 50 years, Jan, live near the small village of Fredericktown in north-central Ohio. Gross spent a 26-year career with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife, before retiring in 2002 to begin outdoors writing and photography fulltime. In addition to spring turkey hunting with his sons and grandsons, Chip enjoys clay-target shooting and Lake Erie walleye fishing.
He created WORDsmith Publishing, and his book Home, At Last, Is the Hunter was published in 1994. It is a truly unique book in all of turkey hunting literature: a semi-autobiographical fiction novel based on the author’s many years of experience in the spring turkey woods. It’s the story of young Jeff Stewart, age 13, who learns to hunt the wild turkey from his maternal grandfather, known as the Boss. The story follows the boy to age 21, chronicling his many adventures in the turkey woods spanning those formative years. It’s during that time that Jeff not only matures as a turkey hunter but also grows mentally, physically, relationally, and even spiritually, while simultaneously being forced to face one of life’s most monumental struggles: death.
Brent Rogers, wild turkey literature expert, said of the novel, “I consider Home, At Last, Is the Hunter a masterpiece, a book every turkey hunter should read. I’ve read it five times…”.
Through the years, Gross has received numerous awards for his writing and photography from both the Outdoor Writers Association of America and the Outdoor Writers of Ohio. In addition, he has twice been honored as the Conservation Communicator of the Year by the League of Ohio Sportsmen (1988 and 2012).Collection
