Artist’s Statement by Jeff D’Agostino
Founder, The Art of The Call
My practice is dedicated to the preservation and elevation of the American turkey call, viewed through the dual lenses of acoustic authenticity and illustrative narrative. For over three decades, I have explored the transformation of raw, organic elements—specifically wild turkey bone, river cane, antler, and horn—into functional instruments that serve as both a hunter’s tool and a cultural artifact.
The foundation of my work rests upon the belief that a call must perform flawlessly in the field before it can be considered a canvas for art. The "tuning phase" of my process is a clinical pursuit, laser-focused on extracting the most realistic and nuanced "hen voices" from natural substrates. To me, a call that lacks a true, soulful voice cannot be a work of art, regardless of its exterior aesthetic.
In 2022, my artistic direction underwent a significant evolution. I transitioned from traditional surface scrimshaw to a sophisticated application of pencil, ink, and infused color. This shift allowed for a higher degree of fidelity and depth in my wildlife renderings, enabling me to capture specific moments in time and the spirit of the wild turkey with archival precision. This transition reflects my commitment to advancing the decorative standards of the craft while honoring its primitive origins.
Each piece I create represents a marriage of art and function. By signing and numbering every call and accompanying it with a personal, handwritten letter, I document the unique history and material origin of the instrument. My goal is to provide more than a tool; I am offering a piece of hunting heritage—a legacy to be held in the hand. The ultimate reward remains the successful transformation of natural elements into works of art that honor the bird, the craft, and the deep-rooted traditions of the American woods.Created By
