Leon C. Johenning Turkey Caller U.S. Patent issued May, 6 1958
Entry/Object ID
VTC0020006
Description
Granted a patent in 1958 for his “Leon’s Turkey Caller,” Johenning's caller is a box-diaphragm sporting a rubber diaphragm stretched and pinned across the call. Johenning felt these materials provided a more natural sound, vibration, and tone because they best mimic biological parts, and that his caller was on par with wingbone and trumpet calls in terms of how turkeys perceived its realism. Since Johenning’s time, the synthetic materials used for diaphragms and tube calls have much improved, but if you have heard a Leon’s caller in the hands of someone familiar with it, you won’t soon forget it. In 1964, a man named Bill Clements may have won a National Calling Contest in Yellville, Arkansas, using Leon’s Turkey Caller.
