Mark Sharpe said, “Some call me Uncle Pecos, and some call me Yosemite Sam. But Red Beard calls me Gus.” He is 64 years old as of March 2026 and was in building construction, then in the telecommunications industry as an engineer for the last 23 years.
In 2010, he started his callmaking shop in Claxton, GA. “I was wanting to get back to old school turkey hunting. I can't say I had anyone that inspired me. I'd turkey hunted for many years. I missed many conventions because I was more interested in turkeys than calling contest or conventions,” Sharpe told us.
The first NWTF convention he attended was in Charleston, SC, after Hurricane Hugo passed through in 1989. At that point, he'd never heard of Neil Cost. He said he missed out on meeting some great callmakers at that show because of his own ignorance.
At the time, he started building wingbones and yelpers, and he personally knew of two people building them: Fred Cox and Gerry Bramblett. He commented, “Man has that changed!”
Sharpe builds wingbones, Jordan Yelpers (original style), and cane yelpers. He entered two wingbones at the National Wild Turkey Federation contest in Nashville, winning a 4th and a 5th place. He said, “I saw where that was headed. Keep a guy on the hook, and he'll keep sending them! Those were the only two calls I've ever entered. I build calls for turkey hunters, not contest calls!”
This callmaker has strong name recognition among attendees of the Unicoi Custom Callmakers Show at Unicoi State Park near Helen, Georgia, each January. He was part of bringing that show back. It is a grand event, with some of the country’s best custom callmakers offering calls.Create Date
